Road-Legal Number Plates UK: What You Need to Know

Short answer: 3D gel and 4D number plates can be legal for road use in the UK, but the finished plate must meet the rules for construction, layout and supply. A raised style on its own does not make a plate legal or illegal.

Are 3D gel number plates legal?

They can be. The BNMA says that solid-black gel digits affixed to the front of a plate are currently viewed by DVLA as legal under BS AU 145e, provided the finished plate meets the rest of the standard. Coloured, carbon-effect, highlighted or two-tone characters are not suitable for a road-legal plate.

Are 4D number plates legal?

They can also be legal. “4D” usually describes raised acrylic characters, but that label is not a legal standard. The important point is whether the complete plate complies with the current rules. What makes a number plate road legal?
