How to Fit Number Plates Without Drilling

You do not always need to drill a new number plate. Strong automotive adhesive pads, a compatible holder or a purpose-made removable mounting kit can produce a clean finish—provided the method suits the vehicle and keeps the plate secure and fully readable.

Before you start

  • Check that the plate matches the vehicle and mounting area.
  • Make sure the bodywork, bumper or existing holder is sound.
  • Choose fittings intended for exterior automotive use.
  • Do not place pads, clips or other fixings over any character or required plate marking.

A number plate that is insecure, obscured or difficult to read can fail an MOT. The official GOV.UK number-plate guidance explains the importance of displaying the registration correctly.

Option 1: automotive adhesive pads

High-quality double-sided number-plate pads are the simplest no-drill choice for a smooth, flat mounting surface.

  1. Remove the old plate and carefully clear away old adhesive.
  2. Wash the mounting area, then degrease it with a vehicle-safe panel cleaner.
  3. Allow both the panel and the rear of the plate to dry completely.
  4. Apply several pads evenly across the back of the plate, including near the corners, without stacking them.
  5. Use masking tape or measured reference points to check the position.
  6. Remove the liners, align the plate once and press firmly across the whole surface.
  7. Follow the pad manufacturer’s guidance on temperature and curing time before driving.

Adhesive pads work best on clean, flat surfaces. Heavy curvature, textured plastic, wax, ceramic coating, cold weather or contamination can reduce adhesion.

Option 2: a number-plate holder

If the vehicle already has a securely fitted holder or mounting frame, the new plate may clip or slide into it without drilling the plate itself. Confirm the holder is the correct size, locks securely and does not cover the registration, supplier details or British Standard mark.

Option 3: a removable or magnetic mounting kit

A purpose-made removable number-plate kit can suit vehicles where access behind the bumper or grille allows the paired components to be installed correctly. Follow the kit instructions carefully and test the hold before road use. Magnets will not attach directly to plastic body panels without the corresponding concealed mounting components.

How to align a number plate neatly

Measure from fixed points on the vehicle rather than judging by eye. Mark the centre of the plate and mounting area with low-tack tape, check the height on both sides and step back before making the final bond. The plate should sit towards the front or rear of the vehicle in the intended position and remain clearly visible.

Final safety checks

  • Pull gently at every corner to confirm the plate is secure.
  • Check that the registration is level and unobstructed.
  • Inspect adhesive mounts after the first few journeys and after extreme weather.
  • Replace any pad, holder or fitting that loosens or deteriorates.

This guide is general advice. Vehicle surfaces and mounting systems differ; follow the fitting-product and vehicle-manufacturer instructions, and seek professional help if you are unsure.
