Are 4D Number Plates Legal in the UK?
Share
Yes—4D number plates can be legal for UK road use, but only when the complete plate meets the rules. “4D” is a retail term for raised, precision-cut acrylic characters; it is not a separate legal category or a guarantee of compliance.
What makes a 4D plate road legal?
GOV.UK confirms that number plates may have raised or 3D characters. A road-use plate must still satisfy all of the normal requirements, including:
- reflective material, with a white front plate and yellow rear plate
- black characters in the prescribed typeface, size and spacing
- no background pattern
- the supplier’s identifying mark
- the applicable British Standard mark—BS AU 145e for plates fitted after 1 September 2021
- characters that are fixed, non-reflective and a single shade of black on plates fitted after 1 September 2021
You can check the current specification on the official GOV.UK number-plate rules page.
Why some 4D plates are not legal
The raised construction is not normally the problem. A 4D plate may be unsuitable for road use if other choices make the registration difficult to read or take the plate outside the specification. Common examples include:
- altered or compressed character spacing
- decorative fonts, sloping characters or incorrectly formed digits
- tinted films or covers that reduce clarity or reflectivity
- missing supplier or British Standard markings
- show-plate layouts or decorative effects selected for display use
Incorrectly displayed registration plates can lead to a fine of up to £1,000 and may cause a vehicle to fail its MOT. The official GOV.UK overview explains these consequences.
Are 4D gel plates different?
Some designs combine an acrylic base character with a domed gel layer. This changes the finish, not the underlying compliance test. Whether a plate is described as 4D, 4D gel or another style, the complete road-use plate must meet the same requirements.
What should you select when ordering?
If the plates will be fitted to a vehicle used on public roads, choose the road-use configuration, enter the registration exactly as assigned and provide the required identity and entitlement documents. Show-plate options are intended for display and off-road use.

The simple answer
4D characters are permitted, but legality depends on the complete plate—not the marketing name. Correct materials, lettering, spacing and markings matter more than whether the characters are flat, gel-domed or acrylic-raised.
